still life

leaves and flowers

I tried pastels again today. I used the paint thinner, and the blending that I learned about on-line. But I think pastels are better suited to something that is larger, and not so detailed. I enjoyed it, but it was difficult to control the pastels in the small shapes required for this drawing.  I persist! ( I like the colours of the pastels. )

  1. I notice that you "bent" the branches and leaves to fit into the format of the paper! Art is so selective - allows you to pick out only the branch from the table and background, and to depict it in the way that suits you, the artist, showing the leaves as more intensely purple! Art like writing or any "creative" endeavour is about presenting the artist's point of view - always.

  2. Yes, in the end, the painting or drawing has its own life. And if you only move the still life a tiny bit, it becomes an entirely different reality. The angles change, the shadows change, and what you can see changes.

The same thing happens too, if you move a bit. Again, a different picture emerges. And if the time of day changes, or the lighting, again, another and different picture emerges. It is quite fascinating!
